The chair was originally made with eleven flat wooden boards, featuring a straight back and seat, with wide armrests. Its design would later be modified by Irving Wolpin to feature a more rounded back and seat for optimal comfort. The chair was a huge success, not only with Lee's family, but it also quickly became one of the most desired outdoor seating products by other holiday-makers in the area. It was renamed the Adirondack chair by and before long, his family seating experiment became a world-wide outdoor seating must-have.
